4/16/2021When designing your home interior, there are a few common pitfalls that you should try to avoid. John Elliott Interiors is the best interior design company at the Lake of the Ozarks, so we know how to help guide your design away from these mistakes and keep your home looking fresh and beautiful. Take a look at these important tips and see if you have any of these mistakes going on in your home design!
Rushing Decisions
One of the big mistake that can be made right off the bat is rushing your decisions. Once you decide you're ready to re-design your home, you may be anxious to get started and start picking things. But, if you do this too quickly without thoroughly considering your whole design, you may end up with colors, pieces, and patterns that don't fit well together. Instead, take your time to think through the overall design and feel of the space and carefully choose things that will work well together.
No Focal Point
A focal point provides direction and order in interior design. It could be a statement piece that draws one's eye when they come into the room, a focal wall that is painted or textured in a different way than the others, or something else. A few examples of a good focal point are a beautiful piece of furniture, an awe-inspiring piece of art, a large fireplace, or a big window with a view. When imagining the room's interior design, begin at the focal point and build out around it. It is possible to have more than one focal point in a room as long as they don't compete with each other for attention.
Not Paying Attention to Scale
You'll need to do a little research before blindly going shopping to pick out your new furniture. Everything in your design should not only fit together well, but it should also definitely fit well in the room you're designing.
Lots of small pieces of furniture in a very large space may seem awkward and cause the room to look unbalanced. On the other hand, trying to fit large pieces into a small space can make a room appear cluttered and cramped. Know your room's measurements before shopping and be sure to measure the furniture you're considering so you know it will fit into the space easily. Many pieces are available in different sizes, so always ask if you don't see exactly what you're looking for!

Pushing Furniture Against Walls
Some furniture may need to be placed directly against a wall, but don't think that you have to outline the room with furniture. Pulling some, or all, of the pieces together into a tighter arrangement will create groupings that are more conducive to conversation. The space behind the furniture not placed against walls will add to the flow of the room as well.
Cluttered Design
The accessories you will find in our home décor store at the Lake of the Ozarks are meant to add to the beauty of your interior design, not overwhelm it. If you have too many knick-knacks all over the room, it will look cluttered and busy. A cluttered room can often be mistaken for a messy room, and no one wants that! The items you use to decorate should be chosen to complement the room's overall theme and not just because you liked the piece on its own in the store.
