How to Organize for Your New Year Design

When you're getting ready to redesign a space, it's better to not have a bunch of clutter and chaos in your way interfering with your creativity. In today's blog, we are talking about how to get ready before your design with proper organization. Keep reading to learn more!

Organize in Order

If you try to organize things in the wrong order, you could end up getting frustrated too early and give up. According to the proven KonMari Method, it's best to start with your clothing. Typically, clothing is not sentimental and is therefore easier to get rid of. After all, you know if you haven't worn something in a year or more, you probably won't wear it again. Next, go through your books, then papers, then miscellaneous items. You should save sentimental items for last. These can be really hard to sort through and let go of, so it's best to save it for the end when you've been able to refine your ability to sort through your belongings and decide what you need and what brings you joy.

Let Things Go

If you have furniture or home décor that works with your upcoming interior design, make sure those pieces are in the rooms where they belong. As for all of the things you no longer need, it's time to let them go. Don't try to make something fit where it doesn't make sense and don't fill your garage with things you won't be using or displaying just because you "might need it someday." In that case, all you're doing is wasting space, storing things you no longer use.

Have a Disposal Plan

The best way to organize the things you will be getting rid of is to have three categories: trash, recycle, and donate. The "trash" items are easy to get rid of. Simply bag them up and put them out with the rest of your garbage. For large items that are too big for regular pickup, contact your trash company to arrange for a special pickup. The "recycle" items are easy also if you have curbside pickup. If not, find a local spot that accepts recycling items. If you have no accessible place near you that does this, then you'll have to add your recyclables to the trash category.

Your "donate" pile will sit in your home indefinitely if you don't make plans to get it out of the house. Find a local thrift store or shelter that accepts the things you have to donate and plan a definite date when you will deliver your stuff to them. Write it down on your calendar. Sometimes the simple act of giving yourself a deadline will inspire you to act. If you can find a place that offers pickup service for donations, even better!

Decide Each Room's Purpose

Decide what each room's purpose should be and then imagine how you can best make that happen. Notice if rooms are "bleeding into" each other, meaning that certain items are out of place. For example, a home office is probably not the space where a treadmill should be placed, and a work desk in your bedroom can take away from the relaxing feeling that room should give you.

Once you decide what each room's purpose should be, evaluate whether or not the items in each room are fulfilling that purpose. When you find things that don't belong, either move them to a room that makes more sense or plan to get rid of the unnecessary items.

With cold weather creeping in and winter's official start just four days away, you may not be thinking about plants right now. But, now is actually the perfect time to add houseplants into your interior design. Mood Enhancing

There have been studies that show environments with plants have a calming effect. In offices, it has been shown that employees are happier, more motivated, and take fewer sick days when there are plants in the office. Plants get their nutrients by converting sunlight and carbon dioxide into food for itself and oxygen. That increased level of oxygen in your home is a great benefit to having plants as part of your interior design. In the winter, people often experience depression associated with less sunlight, shorter days, and being stuck inside. Having mood-enhancing plants around can be a huge benefit in the winter!

Moisturizing

Plants help add moisture to the air naturally and cleanly. This is another great benefit of using plants in your home. You could buy a humidifier, but they aren't always attractive pieces of equipment and they require attention and maintenance regularly. Plants are beautiful and many types require very little maintenance. You never have to change a filter with a plant! Winter air is especially dry due to the increased use of heating systems. So many home materials produce these compounds, it's no wonder that there can be high concentrations in your home. Plants can help capture these materials and filter them out of the air. Textured leaves can help with this even more because of the increased surface area they have. Purifying air in the winter is even more important because people are less likely to open windows and doors to let in fresh air when the temperature is around freezing. (Important Note: If you have allergies, try to avoid plants that produce pollen or spores, as that could make your symptoms worse.)

Great Purifying Plants

There are a lot of beautiful plants that you could use to decorate your home, but there are a few that are particularly great at purifying the air. Read below to see what kind of plant may be right for you!

English Ivy
This plant has been known to very effectively remove a large portion of mold from the air. Environmental mold can be a big problem in Missouri, so having some English Ivy around could help improve asthma and allergy symptoms caused by mold.

Boston Ferns
NASA ranked this plant as great for removing formaldehyde, plastics, and cigarette smoke from the air. In fact, Boston Ferns will take these compounds and use them for their own development.

Snake Plant
This plant is effective at removing xylene, toluene, and trichloroethylene from the air. An extra benefit to the Snake Plant is that it continues to turn carbon dioxide into oxygen through the night. Having one of these plants in your room could help you sleep better due to the increased level of oxygen in the proximity.

Gerbera Daisy
This plant also produces oxygen through the night and could help with sleep. NASA rated the Gerbera Daisy as the most effective plant at removing benzene from the air.

Mass Cane
This is a slow-growing and low-maintenance plant, so it's a great option for people that don't have a "green thumb". It is also ranked as the number one plant at removing formaldehyde from the air by NASA.

Decorating Your Christmas Table This Year

Decorating the house for Christmas is fun and can typically be pretty care free. After all, you have your same familiar and beautiful decorations you get out every year and they go in the same beloved place to fill your house with joy. But... This year you're hosting Christmas dinner and you'll have to decorate a whole tablescape for the family to admire during the holiday dinner. So, how should you decorate? Are there rules to follow? Keep reading to learn some of our favorite tablescape themes and how you can incorporate them into your holidays this year.

White Christmas

This theme is one of our favorites because of how simple it can be to execute. Choosing any monochromatic theme, in fact, is a great design choice. It allows you to find choose accent pieces and décor items from any store regardless of whether or not they are from the same collection. Sticking to one color gives you the freedom to be adventures with textures and patterns that may not work otherwise.

For a White Christmas Tablescape, choose a plain white tablecloth as your base, find white floral pieces like white poinsettia blooms, frosted berries, white roses, and so on. Accent the table with white candles in clear or frosted candle holders, and add sparkling white ornaments in strategic places. The overall look of this theme makes it seem like you've walked into a magical winter wonderland. This theme is sure to wow your guests!

Classic

You can't go wrong with the classic Christmas look for your tablescape. Use the traditional colors of red and green as your guide while choosing décor. Take it in a new direction with red roses instead of the traditional poinsettia, and add ornaments to your floral arrangements for extra Christmas spirit.

This theme makes everyone feel at home during the holidays with its nostalgic ambiance. Create a beautiful design by using cuts of wood as the chargers under each plate, and accent the space around the table with pine cones and greenery. Setting the Table

Do you know the correct way to set a table? That's okay, not many people know all of the details behind setting a formal table properly. Every setting should start with the dinner plate, salad plate, and soup bowl. Moving out to the right, add the dinner knife, tea spoon, and soup spoon in that order. Moving to the left from the plate, place the dinner fork, salad fork, and napkin. The bread plate and butter knife belong in the top left corner, and the wine glasses and water goblet belong in the top right corner. The dessert fork should be placed above the plate, with the dessert spoon directly above that. If you are ever attending a formal dinner and aren't sure which utensil to use when enjoying your meal, just remember to work your way in from the outside as you go.
