Cleaning Tips for the Holidays!
12/04/2020Fall is a great time of year! Pumpkin spice has already entered the scene this year, and it's time to start thinking toward your fall and holiday décor. Before you do though, it's important to start with a clean slate. John Elliott Interiors thinks cleaning and refreshing your home is a great way to do this, and we have the tips to help you get started. Keep reading to learn more!
The Basics
Perform your regular home maintenance cleaning as usual - dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, dishes, laundry. They may all seem like standard tasks that you won't forget. But sometimes in the rush of getting ready for the holiday season, it can be easy to let your regular habits fall by the wayside. As you're doing each of these chores leading up to your holiday celebration, take each task one step further. For example, when you vacuum, use the hose attachment along the edge of every room, deep clean the couch cushions, and vacuum windowsills, corners, and ceiling fans. Going just a little farther with each task can make your home feel like it's sparkling and ready for the holiday season before you know it!
Air Quality
The air quality in your home can make a huge difference in how comfortable and clean the house feels. Air should be the proper temperature, humidity, and cleanliness. You can keep the air clean and comfortable with a few tips...
- Use a humidifier if you notice a lot of static or abnormally dry sinuses.
- Change the air filter regularly to keep dust and pet dander from circulating in the house.
- Keep house plants in several rooms for their air purifying qualities in addition to their beauty.
- Open up the windows when the temperature is a bit higher for some fresh air while you clean.
Refresh Furniture & Curtains
It can be difficult to keep the soft surfaces in the house clean – couch cushions, curtains, rugs, etc. Check the tags first before cleaning anything to make sure you don't ruin it. If it’s safe to clean them in the washing machine, you can use the “sanitize” setting on your machine to destroy as much bacteria as possible. Removing the dust and bacteria lingering on those surfaces can help improve the air quality in your home. Not to mention, the house will look more fresh and clean without dust, dirt, and dander dulling the cloth material.
For items that can’t be cleaned in the washing machine, look for an antibacterial spray that is safe to use on the cloth surfaces in your home. Apply it to your soft furnishings and decorative pillows to help kill bacteria and remove stale odors.
