Keep reading to find some tips and inspiration on how to get started balancing your home design.
Play with Color
Having a balanced palette does not mean it has to be monochromatic. In fact, balance is about using different colors - or even opposite colors - in an eye-catching way. When looking at a color wheel, the colors opposite one another are called complimentary colors and are supposed to go well with one another in design.
This can be a great strategy for choosing your base color and the color of your accent pieces to include throughout the room. For example, your base color may be purple which leads you to use a pale lavender as your wall color. This means your artwork, decorative pillows, etc. could really shine in a yellow hue. For a softer approach, try using a yellow gold.
Balance vs. Symmetry
Sometimes when people think of something having balance, they think that means it must be symmetrical. That is not necessarily true. If there is too much symmetry in your home décor, then it could start to look like a museum instead of a well-designed home.
Instead of going for perfect symmetry, try to strike a balance between symmetry and asymmetry. For example, when designing bookshelves, one shelf may have perfect symmetry with bookends on either side of a set of classic books, while another shelf could have a stack of books on their sides and decorative pottery or figurines.
Vary Heights & Sizes
As you choose furniture, decorative items, and pieces of artwork to use in your home interior, be sure to vary the heights and sizes of the items. If everything is small and short, the overall design will look awkward and empty. On the other hand, if everything is large and tall, you run the risk of having an overcrowded space that looks cluttered and smaller than it is. Instead, mix sizes and shapes to strike the perfect balance and create a good flow from room to room.
