Decorations
Holiday decorations are a fun part of the season, helping everyone get into the holiday mood. There are also a lot of great themes to choose from - classic red & green, soft blue & white, rustic décor with pine and wood chargers (the decorative platters that go under the plates your guests actually use), and even more choices. Choose the design the fits your style and home décor and run with it! As you decorate your table, just make sure to leave plenty of room for your silverware, glasses, and food to be placed in the center for serving.
Table Settings
Do you know the correct way to set a table? That's okay, not many people know all of the details behind setting a formal table properly. Every setting should start with the dinner plate, salad plate, and soup bowl. Moving out to the right, add the dinner knife, tea spoon, and soup spoon in that order. Moving to the left from the plate, place the dinner fork, salad fork, and napkin. The bread plate and butter knife belong in the top left corner, and the wine glasses and water goblet belong in the top right corner. The dessert fork should be placed above the plate, with the dessert spoon directly above that. If you are ever attending a formal dinner and aren't sure which utensil to use when enjoying your meal, just remember to work your way in from the outside as you go.
Menu Items
The holidays come with a set of menu items that are typically expected around this season: turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and more. But, you don't have to be afraid to shake it up! If you're the adventurous type, do some research each year into how other cultures celebrate the holiday seasons and make new dishes you've never tried. Yum! If your holiday meal is served in the evening, then it's a good idea to make appetizers, light snacks, or charcuterie for guests to enjoy during the day. They'll love you for it!
