Shelf Design Doesn't Have to be Hard!

10/08/2021

Designing shelves can be hard... Where do you start? Do you fill them with knickknacks and books? Do you show off awards and souvenirs? While the answer is not that simple, those are some great places to start with your inspiration. John Elliott Interiors is the best interior design company at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we have the tips you need to get started on a really great design.

Go Seasonal

Decorating for the seasons is a great way to get inspiration for your shelving design. It gives you a great source of inspiration with a lot of easy inspiration ideas available at the tip of your fingers. For fall, go with warm colors that imitate the changing colors of the leaves, soft fabrics that show warmth and make your home feel cozy. In the winter, you can go with more icy themes can make you feel like you're in a winter wonderland! Go for bright white and icy blues, or the traditional red and green, for the best color schemes for the season.

Use Passions as Your Guide

When choosing accessories to add alongside your books, don’t choose random items just because they look pretty in the store. Think about the things that you are passionate about and select décor items based on those things. The more the items mean to you, the more you will like seeing them displayed on your shelves for years to come.

 Use Odd Numbers

The Rule of Three indicates that items are more visually pleasing in groups of three. If you have unmatched items, create an interesting vignette on your bookshelf by grouping them together in groups of three or five. While they may not look like they belong together when viewed on their own, grouping them together in an interesting way can make for a beautiful design.

Combine Similar Materials

Choosing décor elements from scratch can be difficult, but not if you follow the similarity rule. Select a color/material and find several items that match one another in that regard to begin your design. For example, find various pots all glazed with the same color or wooden decorative items all stained in a similar shade. Variety can come in with the texture and size of the items. Group these items together for a clean, eye-pleasing design.

Color Coordinate Books

Many people automatically assume that books should be organized from largest to smallest, but that is not always the case. If your books are multiple different sizes, this could end up looking a bit strange across the shelf. Instead, separate the books by average size, putting large books on one shelf and smaller books on another. Then, arrange the books by color. This creates a very visually pleasing aesthetic rather than a busy or cluttered feel.

Go Big

Accumulating numerous knick-knacks can happen without even realizing it sometimes. But very small items clustered together can quickly start looking cluttered and collect dust rapidly. Instead, find larger items to make a statement and portray a cleaner look for your interior design.
