Follow the 60-30-10 Rule
- 60% of the room's color is the walls.
- 30% of the room's color is the upholstery and furniture.
- 10% of the room's color is in the accent pieces of the room.
So, if you want to make the biggest impact, you would go for the walls with your color choice. On the other hand, if you just want to add a touch of the color, you would focus on the accent pieces.
Black Walls
This is perhaps one of the boldest choices you can make with the color black. A black wall gives your room drama, finesse, and a focal point that can't be ignored. One thing to keep in mind when painting a wall black is the size of the wall. You don't want to paint all the walls in a room black or the space will feel overwhelming and small. You also wouldn't want to paint a very large, long wall black as it will have the same effect. Instead, choose a wall that would act as an accent, or that would be used to frame something you want to be the focus of your room - perhaps a high-end piece of furniture, a stand-out fireplace, or something similar.
Black Furniture
This is a strategy that is often found in homes, particularly using black leather furniture. However, that is not the only option. Think instead of painting your wooden furniture a solid, strong black. Blacking out your cabinets in the kitchen can also give a dramatic, sturdy look that anchors the rest of the kitchen design.
Black Accents
Not committed to a large amount of black in your space yet? No worries! You can still add touches that bring the strength of black into your space. Consider choosing black fabrics for your pillows and throw blankets or try rich black curtains over your windows. (Added benefit - black is a great color to cover windows with to truly block out light and temperature differences!) Another great way to neutralize the design of your space and have less cluttered colors would be to display black and white photos on the wall. This gives a real gallery vibe to the space and can still invoke a lot of drama.
