The Basics of Decorating Your Home
4/04/2017The month of April is Decorating Month, and there's no better time to consider restyling your home than spring. Start your spring cleaning, add a fresh vibe to your home, and let the team at John Elliott Interiors assist you. Here are a few things you need to know about decorating your home, and how the best home interiors store at the Lake of the Ozarks can help.
Incorporate Odd Numbers
When arranging and designing spaces around your home, it's better to utilize odd numbers in your groupings. While you want to utilize varying heights, patterns, you can also help catch the eye through using odd numbers. They create a foundation for harmony and visual interest. Are you looking for the perfect accent for your coffee table? We have a store full of beautiful decorations to help you create your ideal look in your home.
Find a Focal Point
What is the one thing that your eye is drawn to when you walk into your room? Is it the stone fireplace at the end of the room? That large windows that overlook your manicured lawn? Use those focal points to draw the eye in. If you're lost on how to start decorating your room, start by finding the focal point, or create one!
Utilize Measurement Rules
Did you know that when decorating your home, there are certain heights and spaces that are standard for your decor and furniture? Here are a few to keep in mind:
- Keep your coffee table and sofa at least 15" apart.
- When hanging art, you want to keep it at eye level, which is generally 56" to 60" from the floor. If you're hanging several pieces, keep the whole arrangement at this level.
- If you're hanging art above your sofa, keep it no more than 2/3 of the width of the sofa, and leave about 5-9" between the furniture and the art.
- When hanging curtains, you'll want to leave about 1-3" of overlap on either side of your window, and mount the rods about 4" from the top of the window.
Consider Negative Space
Did you know that negative space isn't always a bad thing? Sometimes the negative space or the empty space without objects (which is typically on your walls) can speak more than having it filled. Coco Chanel was said to have suggested that when you leave your home, stop at the mirror and take one thing off. Many times, it's so easy to over accessorize your outfit, and the same goes with your home as well. If you are stumped when creating your ideal design, may try relocating an item to another room.
