How To Choose The Right Color Palette For Your Interior

11/18/2016

Have you decided on the style of interior you want but need color inspiration? Your home is your palace and being comfortable in your rooms is the number one priority. From the whole-house paint palette to furniture and accents, John Elliott Interiors can help you choose an overall palette for your decorating project. Bear in mind that just because you like a color doesn't mean it's necessarily ideal for your project. Start by focusing on the feel you're hoping to achieve. Do you want the space to be bright and cheery, or dark and cozy? Consider your location and the amount of light you have to work with then review these tips.

Paint Palette

Note which rooms are visible to one another. As you walk through your house, note which spaces you can see from each room. Start by picking a wall color for the biggest, most centrally located room. This is likely to be your living room or kitchen, and it's a great place to start working on your whole-house palette.

  • Soft, neutral hues for main rooms will open up the area for accent accessories and furniture, and remember, you can't go wrong with white.
  • If you love color and have a certain hue in mind begin there. Looking out from the bold-hued room, choose a softer, more subdued color for the next rooms.
  • Build your palette with shades of the same hue. For adjacent rooms or walls, choose a hue from a nearby paint chip. For a safe blended palette, you can pick the next color up or down on the same paint chip and rest assured that the colors will go well together.

Furniture

Once your walls are painted, it's time to consider furnishings and accessories. When choosing your color palette you may want to start with contrasts, something dark paired with something light. If color and energy are your focus, consider adding bright pieces. Test out your color choices with paint swatches and fabrics. The interior design team at John Elliott Interiors is always ready to discuss room plans and help you create a flow from room to room.

  • Bright, hot colors work well in warm, sunny areas. Try choosing one hue for the larger pieces like sofas and rugs, then bring in contrast colors for accessories like pillows and lamps.
  • If your style is more subtle, softer, neutral shades of ivory, beige, greys and whites will always compliment each other.
  • Sometimes the best colors can be found right outside your door - the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks and lush greenery that surround it is great inspiration!

Artwork

Another approach to choosing color is to take the hue from an object you already own. John Elliott Interiors has an immense collection of artwork at the Lake of the Ozarks, and a great investment piece like this can be the perfect place to start. If you love the piece, you may love the same colors reflected elsewhere in the room.

Choosing color should be enjoyable! As you begin testing your potential palette, and you narrow down your color choices, bring your winners to John Elliott Interiors at the Lake of the Ozarks. Our experts will help you understand the colors and locate the right furnishings and accessories to compliment your style and color palette.
