Have you ever wondered what feng shui is really about and if it could help promote better flow and balance in your own house? Feng shui can be defined as "the art of placing items in such a way as to achieve a feeling of harmony and balance." As the best interior design company at the Lake of the Ozarks, John Elliott Interiors designs beautiful spaces that help give you the home of your dreams. Today we're talking about the principles of feng shui and how you can incorporate them in your own home.
Feng Shui and Balance
There are a lot of different ideas involved in the art of feng shui. You can start with these several simple concepts first and see how it helps improve the flow and feel in your home. Once you've begun, you can dive further into the beliefs and culture of feng shui to bring your whole home into balance and harmony.
Eliminate Distracting Clutter
Feng shui teaches that all objects, alive and inanimate, have energy that they add to a space. If you have a lot of clutter or a poorly organized space, then the energy can get trapped and won't be able to flow freely through the house. Additionally, if you have too many items, it can add a lot of competing energy signals into the room. Aim to decorate with simple beauty that makes you feel at peace. Your surroundings should communicate the feelings you want to experience every day in your home: relaxation, harmony, peace.
Natural Light
Using natural light in the interior of your home is an important part of feng shui. During the day, open your windows to allow sunlight into your space. Not only will it help your interior design feel lighter and more natural, but sunlight has also been shown to help boost your mood and improve your focus.
Design with the Elements
In the culture of feng shui, it is believed that the elements of wind and water are associated with good health. Surround yourself with that energy by designing with the calming colors, airiness, and movement of water and wind. Think of light blues, greys, and whites for colors and airy textures and lighter fabrics that don't weigh down the space.
Bring balance to your life and add a natural aspect to your interior décor by using the other elements in your design: wood, fire, earth, and metal. Getting back to nature and these basic elements can help us feel grounded and more balanced in our homes.
